GERDBuddy vs mySymptoms: Which Should You Use for Acid Reflux?
Luke McKnight, Founder, GERDBuddyWe make GERDBuddy, so read this knowing exactly where we stand. We're writing it anyway because people ask, and because the honest answer isn't "ours, obviously." These are two genuinely different tools that happen to share a category. All ratings and prices below are from the US App Store as of August 2026.
The one-paragraph verdict: mySymptoms is a broad, mature food and symptom diary with statistical analysis, available on Android, iPhone, iPad, and Mac. If you want to log everything and let correlation analysis hunt for patterns across any condition, it's excellent, and it has a decade of ratings to back it up. GERDBuddy is reflux-only and built around the moment of decision: scan a meal or a restaurant menu before you eat, get your personal trigger ranking, and use a guided routine when a flare hits. If reflux is your one problem and you want help before and during, not just analysis after, that's the job we built it for.
The numbers, side by side
| mySymptoms | GERDBuddy | |
|---|---|---|
| App Store rating | 4.6 stars (~4,000 ratings) | 4.4 stars (22 ratings) |
| Free tier | Food and symptom logging | Symptom logging, limited scans |
| Paid price | $9.99/month, $39.99/6 months, $59.99/year | $6.99/month, $39.99/year (3-day trial) |
| Platforms | iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android | iPhone only |
| Scope | Any diet-related condition (IBS, FODMAP, migraines, eczema, reflux) | GERD and acid reflux only |
| Core method | Log everything, correlation analysis finds patterns | Scanner rates food before you eat, trigger ranking learns from your logs |
| Restaurant menu help | No | Yes, scans and ranks dishes |
| In-flare support | No | Guided relief routine |
| Clinician reports | Yes, shareable reports | Visit-prep summary |
A note on those ratings: mySymptoms has roughly 180 times more ratings than we do. It's been on the store since 2010 and we're the new arrival. A 4.6 backed by 4,000 people is a stronger signal than our 4.4 from 22, and pretending otherwise would be silly.
Where mySymptoms is clearly better
- You're on Android. GERDBuddy doesn't run there. End of comparison.
- Your symptoms go beyond reflux. If you're also chasing IBS, FODMAP sensitivities, migraines, or skin reactions, mySymptoms' whole design is meant for multi-condition correlation. GERDBuddy would only see a slice of your picture.
- You want maximum logging depth. mySymptoms tracks food, drink, medication, stress, sleep, exercise, and environmental factors, and its reports are built for showing a clinician.
Where GERDBuddy is clearly better
- You want an answer before you eat, not after. mySymptoms tells you what happened; its analysis needs weeks of logs. GERDBuddy's scanner gives you a reflux-risk read on a meal photo or a restaurant menu in the moment, then refines its picture of you as you log.
- You eat out a lot. Restaurant menu scanning is the feature GERDBuddy is built around, and nothing in mySymptoms addresses it.
- You want help during a flare. The guided breathing routine exists because 2am reflux is when people actually open the app. A diary has nothing for you at 2am.
- Price, slightly. $39.99/year vs $59.99/year for premium, though mySymptoms' free tier is more complete for pure manual logging.
Can you use both?
Genuinely, yes, and some people should. mySymptoms as the broad clinical diary if you have multiple conditions, GERDBuddy for the restaurant menu and the flare moments. There's no data lock-in on either side of that arrangement.
The bottom line
Ask one question: is reflux your only major food-related issue? If no, or if you're on Android, get mySymptoms. If yes, and especially if eating out is where your GERD decisions get hard, try GERDBuddy, the trial is 3 days and the tracking-first approach it's built on is the one current guidance supports.
